God requires that we provide for our families. “But it any one does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever” (1 Timothy 5:8).
This provision for the family goes beyond just the husband, wife, and children. It includes others in the family—mother, father, grandparents, right on down the line. “If any woman who is a believer has dependent widows, let her assist them, and let not the church be burdened, so that it may assist those who are widows indeed” (1 Timothy 5:16). Paul’s admonition tells us to support the members of our family. Thus, they will not be a burden on the church (or the government).
Here again, we have seared our consciences, turning those responsibilities over to the government. The government is not adequate to accomplish this task, and government officials neither understand the problems nor have the resources to provide adequately. God wants Christians to provide for their families. What kind of a witness will we be to the non-Christian community if the members of our own families go without? Christians mush awaken to this responsibility.
